Fire Safety

Some people think fire safety is simply knowing what to do if your clothes catch on fire, and that is part of it, but fire safety is everything you need to know to be safe, to make your home safe, and knowing what to do if ever a fire starts in your home.

Prevent Preventing a fire from starting in the first place is the most important part of fire safety. Here are some things you can do in your home to prevent fires:

  1. Never cook without an adult present

  2. Keep towels, clothes, and other flammables away from the stove, fireplaces, and heaters

  3. Don’t plug too many things into one outlet

  4. Never play with matches or lighters

  5. Install smoke alarms in your home, check the batteries every six months

Plan By knowing what to do if a fire should happy, you and your family can react quickly and increase the chances that everyone escapes safely. One of the most important things to do is to create a family escape plan. Even children as young as 3 years old can begin to learn what to do in case of a fire.

  1. Draw a floor plan of your home and discuss all exits with your family

  2. Agree on a meeting place – choose a spot outside your house, like a tree or fence

  3. Know how to call the fire department

  4. Practice, practice, practice

Practice Everyone knows that if you want to be good at something, you have to practice! Well, fire safety is no different. Take time to practice what you’ll do if ever you see or smell smoke, or if your smoke detector sounds.

  1. Test any closed doors to make sure they aren’t hot before opening

  2. Crawl low under the smoke

  3. Don’t’ stop, don’t go back

  4. Stop! Drop! and Roll!  If your clothes catch on fire, stop what you are doing, drop to the floor, and roll around covering your face with your hands

If you follow these steps and practice, practice, practice your plan until everyone in your family is comfortable then you will have mastered fire safety!
