Flu Prevention Tips

As you know, it’s that time of year again… dreaded flu season!  We talked about

Flu Shots a few weeks ago, but there are other ways that you and your child can keep from getting sick and from spreading the germs if they do get sick.

Here are just a few steps that can help this flu season:

Wash your hands often, especially before eating or after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose.  This is the #1 tip for prevention since washing your hands will rinse away any germs that you might have picked up here or there during your day.   In addition to good hand washing technique, you will also want to make sure you teach your child to cover their mouth with their elbows instead of their hands.  This will also reduce their interaction with germs and keep them from spreading germs to others.

Along with hand washing, you should also spot-clean germ hotspots in your house.  It’s not dirt you are after, but the germs specifically so pay attention to high-traffic areas where germs linger like countertops, phones, and doorknobs.  Anti-bacterial wipes are great for this, but remember they could also help spread germs so use a wipe once for each surface, then throw it away and grab a new one.

Having a healthy immune system is your best bet for fighting off the seasonal flu. Eating well, staying active, and getting enough sleep are all important steps to boosting your immunity. Multivitamins can also help supply the vital nutrients they need. The AAP recommends a vitamin D supplement for kids up to age 18 as well if your child doesn’t like eggs, milk, or yogurt.  Vitamin D is also found in sunlight so make sure your children are outside some every day if you can.

If your child is exhibiting any signs of a cold or the flu, keep them home from school and away from other family members until you are sure they are no longer contagious. Both AllKids Urgent Care offices are open from noon to 10 pm every day to help if your child’s symptoms are lingering, their fever is excessively high, or you have questions… and remember, we are now offering the flu shot daily at both our Gilbert and Mesa locations.
