Keeping Your Kids Healthy During the Fall

With the change of season and the beginning of school, the active days of summer seem to give way to mounds of homework and too much indoor time. With these simple tips you can keep your kids healthy and active all season long.

Take steps to prevent getting sick

The single best way to protect yourself against the seasonal flu that pops up this time every year is to get vaccinated – make sure you visit either Gilbert Pediatric Urgent Care or Mesa Pediatric Urgent Care to get your flu shot soon.

Make sure you cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your arm when you cough or sneeze and wash your hands often. Keeping your hands clean is one of the most important steps to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others.

Eat smart

Food takes center stage during the fall holidays, but make sure you follow basic safety steps to keep things safe. Avoid cross contamination by keeping things separated, cook to proper temperatures and chill promptly. To take your dinners and school lunches up a notch, eat seasonally. Eating with the season is tastier, cheaper, and higher in nutrition that non-seasonal fruits and vegetables.

Get some outdoor time

Going for a bike ride or setting up a game of touch football in the park are great ways to stay active and healthy during the fall. Or throw on a light jacket or scarf and head out for a walk after dinner – getting the entire family involved is a good way to connect and get some exercise. Also, light exercise will help balance blood sugar levels after a meal – make this a habit to help your family stay healthy.

Healthy habits don’t need to be tough to fit in during hectic fall schedules. By making sure you keep your hands washed, get your flu shot, eat smart with lots of seasonal fruit and vegetables, and getting some much needed Vitamin D by exercising outside you and your kids can keep healthy all fall season long.
